Direct-to-consumer genetic testing and the changing landscape of gamete donor conception: key issues for practitioners and stakeholders

Research questionWhat impact does direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTCGT) have on information sharing in relation to gamete donor conception?DesignThis study used in-depth qualitative interviews with parents through conception, donors, donors’ relatives and donor-conceived people who used, or considered using, DTCGT. Interviews were conducted between September 2021 February 2023.We interviewed 60 defined themselves as having been impacted by both conception Fifty-seven of these resident the UK at time interview. The final sample included 19 (sperm, egg embryo) 25 people, 20 two donors. Five participants occupied more than one roles (hence numbers do not total 60).ResultsOur research shows that rise DTCGT is affecting how about managed. DTCGT: 1) shifts patterns knowledge conception; 2) increases flexibility regarding age access relatives; 3) can lead a growing role for non-professionals, including wider family members, gatekeeping 4) accentuates people's 5) shapes shaped formal regulatory management systems.ConclusionFertility professionals should inform considering, (potential) different ways conception.
